Many people worry about how they’re perceived, even in small moments. But others are often too focused on themselves to notice. Why do you think this happens? Have you ever realized later that no one paid as much attention as you thought?

People often assume they’re being watched more than they actually are because of something called the “spotlight effect.”

We’re naturally self-focused, so we overrate how much attention others give to our actions, mistakes, or appearance. In reality, most people are focused on themselves, not analyzing us as much as we think.
