Many people, especially working adults, appear fine while battling persistent sadness. Why do we miss the signs of high-functioning depression, and how can workplaces or families recognize it before it becomes overwhelming?

High-functioning depression is often ignored because individuals maintain appearances, work, and social interactions despite internal struggles. Symptoms like low motivation, fatigue, or mild sadness can be mistaken for personality traits or stress. Without visible crisis or dramatic behavior, friends, family, and even professionals may overlook the underlying depression.

I am always wary of people that always tend to over-perform. I always tend to find the motivation for such high level of performance. Most people suffering from high functioning depression always over-perform to mask it or are perfectionists to mask it too. That is why I am careful about over-achievers and perfectionists.
